On June 28, 2007, lethal doses of smoke produced by a cooking fire killed three young girls ages 4, 2 and 4 months old, while they were sleeping in their mother's room at the Windsor Court Apartments in Burtonsville, Maryland. The Washington Post article described the scene in the excerpt below:

"The smoke awoke a man in the unit above. He ran down and banged on the door. There was no answer. When firefighters arrived minutes later, he thought he had good news for them. No one was home, the man said, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer. Firefighters burst into the apartment, then doused the flames as they searched for victims. The girls had not been burned but inhaled a lethal amount of smoke. They were taken to three hospitals, where all were pronounced dead." Click to read the Washington Post article.
